Fredericton Markets Make Bold Move
Fredericton, New Brunswick – In a move that shocked many local citizens, on March 31st, 2017 the Fredericton City Council unanimously voted to allow livestock to be offered at both of the city’s markets. The move is in response to many local farmers who vigorously petitioned the city to allow the animals at the market. The Fredericton Area Farmer’s Association (FAFA) represents about 97 farmers from the region has lobbied city council for about two years for the decision.
FAFA representative, John Fallow believes that the addition of livestock to our markets puts Fredericton market’s in-line with other markets around western Canada. He feels that the introduction of livestock enhances the local community and adds a unique flare to the markets. It is a great way to educate citizens about their food. City council agrees.
“It is a win-win situation for everybody. This is the perfect way to create a more traditional theme in the city for both tourists and locals to enjoy. It doubles to help boost the local farming community.”
Fredericton Mayor Mike O’Brien
Citizens will be able to experience livestock starting as early as May 2017. The vendors will have to have special licenses to offer livestock to their customers, which will cost $47.50 plus taxes. It is a worthwhile venture as Fredericton citizens will be able to pick out their favourite meat at both markets. Animals allowed by the law are: chickens, pigs, ducks, cows, geese, lamb and rabbit.
