And you’ll be guided every step of the way by hundreds of student leaders who are here for one purpose: to ensure you have the support you need to have a fun week, and a successful year. Saturday, September 9, 2017

8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., Throughout the City of Fredericton

Imagine it’s Orientation Week 1960 and as a student leader you are looking for a fun activity and a way to help others. These students from Wilfred Laurier University, more than 50 years ago, shined dozens of shoes and raised $1,300, starting the Shinerama tradition.

Shinerama has been a University of New Brunswick tradition since 1973. For the last 44 years, students at UNB have raised money to support Cystic Fibrosis Research in Canada. Shiners have raised nearly $25 million by shining shoes, flipping burgers, washing cars and doing whatever it takes to raise crucial funding to fight cystic fibrosis. Shinerama is now Canada’s largest post-secondary school fundraiser with over 35,000 students in over 60 university and college campuses taking part across the country. Last year we collectively raised over one million dollars. 1
in 3600 babies are born in Canada with cystic fibrosis. When Shinerama first began, the life expectancy of someone with cystic fibrosis was around 6 years old. 50 years later, the average life expectancy is 49.7 years old. This means that for every year Shinerama has existed, the life expectancy has increased by 10 months.

Become a shiner today and be a part of our UNB tradition. You can shine shoes, wash cars, busk, make noise, do a dance, or buff a pair of skates or a bald head (get permission first). The possibilities are endless – no fundraising idea is too big, too small, or too outrageous (as long as we keep it safe). Our day will start with a free breakfast while we run through the day’s activities and learn about Cystic Fibrosis.

So grab a bunch of friends and come out to Shinerama!

Qmunity Ice Cream Social

2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. SUB Quad (grassy area in front of the Student Union Building)
Qmunity, a student-led group focused on supporting LGBTQ* students and allies at UNB, welcomes you to our 2nd Annual Ice Cream Social in the SUB Quad after Shinerama! Free ice cold treats will be provided including popsicles for our lactose-free friends. Stop by to learn a bit about Qmunity and how you can get involved throughout the school year. All are welcome!
