Wine Excellence Award Winners Announced

FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Wine Excellence Awards were held on March 29-30, 2017, in Fredericton. The wines were judged by the following Sommeliers: Bill Vance, Craig Pinhey, Doug Williams, Craig Astles, Jonathan Wilson, and Richard Noiles as well as NB Liquor product advisors.

The award winners in each category are:

  • Best Pinot Grigio – Sommelier Choice: Tenuta Ca’Bolana Pinot Grigio, White, Italy;
  • Best Shiraz – Sommelier & Product Advisor Choice: Barossa Valley Estates Shiraz, Red, Australia;
  • Best Other White Varietal – Sommelier & Product Advisor Choice: Castello del Poggio Moscato Provincia di Pavia IGT, White, Italy;
  • Best Pinot Noir – Product Advisor Choice: Domaine Jessiaume Bourgogne, Red, France;
  • Best Old World Red Blend – Sommelier & Product Advisor Choice: Finca Constancia Sellection, Red, Spain;
  • Best Malbec – Sommelier & Product Advisor Choice: Gran Mascota Malbec, Red, Argentina;
  • Best Sauvignon Blanc – Sommelier & Product Advisor Choice: Left Field Sauvignon Blanc, White, New Zealand;
  • Best Cabernet Sauvignon – Sommelier & Product Advisor Choice: Mercer Estates Horse Heaven Hills, Red, USA;
  • Best Chardonnay – Sommelier Choice: Santa Carolina Reserva, White, Chile;
  • Best Pinot Noir – Sommelier Choice: Santa Carolina Reserva, Red, Chile;
  • Best Pinot Grigio – Product Advisor Choice: Savardo Pinot Grigio DOC, White, Italy;
  • Best White Blend – Sommelier & Product Advisor Choice: Scrubby Rise, White, Australia;
  • Best Other Red Varietal – Sommelier & Product Advisor Choice: The Federalist Lodi Zinfandel, Red, USA;
  • Best Chardonnay – Product Advisor Choice: The Federalist Sonoma, White, USA; and
  • Best New World Red Blend – Sommelier & Product Advisor Choice: Wirra Wirra Church Block Cabernet Shiraz Merlot, Red, Australia.

Bottles of these winners will be available for sale while quantities last at NB Liquor’s Pop-Up Wine Shop, which will be set up as part of the World Wine and Food Expo taking place Nov. 3 and 4 at the Moncton Coliseum. Additional bottles have been ordered and will be available in select stores starting this spring.

NB Liquor will showcase more than 250 products from 13 countries during the expo. People who are not attending the festival can visit the Pop-Up Wine Shop on Friday, Nov. 3, from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

NB Liquor reminds festival attendees to enjoy the Grand Tastings responsibly and plan ahead by taking a convenient and complimentary bus service between downtown Moncton and the coliseum. There will be complimentary water bottle service and a wine check available to store purchases while people attend the expo, sponsored by NB Liquor.
