About Shivering Songs

Our friends at the Shivering Songs Festival are extremely excited to announce another round of artists to an already impressive festival lineup including Timber Timbre, Reeny Smith, Fiver, Laurie Brown and Josh Van Tassel as part of Pondercast, Motherhood, Bob Merseau, The Montgomery St Band, Mike Trask, Julie Aube, Camille Delean, and Loic April. A midwinter celebration of songwriting and storytelling, Shivering Songs hosts internationally renowned artists in rustic and historic spaces throughout Downtown Fredericton, New Brunswick. Originally conceived as a small folk music festival to celebrate the album release of local group The Olympic Symphonium, Shivering Songs has grown into a landmark cultural event that garners the attention of music and literary fans throughout Atlantic Canada and the Northeastern United States.

Our Venues Of Choice

The Wilmot United Church – Constructed in 1852, the building’s unique ‘shoe-box’ profile and dramatically high ceilings produce a spectacular acoustic effect. In addition to offering warm and bold acoustics, Wilmot Church provides a stunning atmosphere. The interior colour scheme, designed in 1948 by the illustrious Canadian artist Alex Colville, coupled with a striking collection of stained glass windows, makes for a full sensory experience.

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre – Originally a six room schoolhouse built in 1884, this provincial historic site was designed by Halifax architect James Dumaresq, who also designed the New Brunswick Legislature. Now a cooperative of local and regional cultural organizations, the Charlotte Street Arts Centre’s fully restored auditorium, with its refinished wood floors and tall ceiling, houses a wonderfully intimate concert venue.

The Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market – Recognized as one of the nation’s best community markets, the Boyce Farmer’s Market has, for decades, been Fredericton’s traditional Saturday morning gathering spot. A vibrant space with room-to-move and an emphasis on local, the Market is the perfect venue for our Saturday late night shows and the hootenanny known as our Sunday Bluegrass Brunch.

Shivering Songs also programs in a number of other venues, from local music institutions such as The Capital Bar, to unconventional spaces such as Fredericton’s Urban Almanac General Store.

More About The 2018 Lineup & Upcoming Events

Shivering Songs is excited to share an impressive initial line-up for its 2018 edition:
Bahamas, David Myles, Catherine MacLellan, Sandro Perri, Hillsburn, and festival founders The Olympic Symphonium. Now celebrating its eighth edition, Shivering Songs runs January 18-21, 2018 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Festival organizers are particularly excited about this year’s initial roster.

“We jumped at the opportunity to grow and include a Tuesday album release show with Bahamas, one of the most in-demand acts in the country,” said Shivering Songs co-organizer Zach Atkinson. “We’re so thrilled to present them at the Festival alongside David Myles, Catherine Maclellan, Sandro Perri, and so many other voices of this next generation of the Canadian songwriting tradition.”

As part of Bahamas’ Earthtones release tour, Shivering Songs will present additional shows in Moncton (Jan 14 @ Capitol Theatre) and Saint John (Jan 15 @ Imperial Theatre). Recorded between Los Angeles and Prague, the album features Pino Palladino and James Gadson, the famed rhythm section of D’Angelo & The Vanguard, who’ve also played with Elton John, Beck, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Simon & Garfunkel, and countless other iconic artists.

“While the music is beyond comparison, the secret weapon of Shivering Songs is certainly their gorgeous space,” said award winning local architect and past performer, John Leroux. “It’s an incredible feeling being in a historic treasure that’s so full of music and life, where the 19th century and the 21st dovetail perfectly.”
