(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s hockey team is adding defender Kalli Hiebert to their recruiting class of 2021.
Hiebert has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join the REDS ahead of the 2021-2022 Atlantic University Sport season.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to add Kalli to our roster for next season,” said REDS head coach Sarah Hilworth. “She’s a mobile, hard-working defender, who has strong defensive positioning and an offensive flair in her game.”
Hiebert is part of Team Saskatchewan’s Top 29 in 2020-21, but the provincial team’s roster is unfinalized because of the pandemic.
She was part of Team Saskatoon’s bronze medal winning effort at the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games, and has been part of city and provincial championship teams at the U13 AA and U18 A levels with Saskatoon Comets teams, in 2016 and 2017.
“I chose UNB because it has a strong hockey program with a drive to win, and a focus on academics,” said Hiebert.
“She’ll bring some height to our back end and we know she’ll be able to fit into other parts of our game too,” said Hilworth.
Hiebert’s club team coach, Robin Ulrich, is excited to see her take the next step.
“The REDS are getting not only a great player, but also a quality individual,” said Ulrich. “Kalli’s skating and ability to understand the game will allow her to step in at the U SPORTS level and make an immediate impact. Her leadership and drive to succeed academically, athletically, and in the community, make her a great fit for the program that Coach Hilworth is building at UNB.”
Hiebert played two seasons as an underage member of the Battleford Sharks U 18 team before playing last season at the Banff Hockey Academy.
Finishing her Grade 12 year at Saskatoon’s St. Joseph High School, Hiebert will study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
